Orlistat for weight loss
Orlistat is a medicine that can help you to lose weight. It helps in weight loss by prevention of digestion and absorption of fat available in food. In the intestine, lipase, an enzyme handles the chemical process of breakdown of fat from the food to a form that can be easily absorbed by the body. Orlistat is capable of blocking the enzyme lipase, which helps in breakdown of the fat. So, your body cannot get fat for absorption.
Orlistat can prevent about 25% of fat absorption from the food. The medicine was approved by the FDA (Orlistat by prescription) in 1999. Alli, a lower dose form of orlistat, was also approved by the FDA as a "over the counter" medicine in 2007.
Orlistat is generally used along with a reduced-calorie diet. The combination helps in weight loss. The medicine is generally prescribed for obese patients who have a body mass index (a measure of obesity) of more than 30 kg/m2. Orlistat can also be prescribed for patients who have a body mass index of between 27 and 30 kg/m2 only if they are having some risk factors for arteriosclerosis like high blood pressure, diabetes, and elevated blood cholesterol or triglycerides. Scientific studies have found that the average weight loss achievable using orlistat is 12.4 to 13.4 pounds, if the medicine is taken as recommended for six months to one year.
Doctors recommend that Xenical should be taken at a standard dose of one capsule (120 mg) three times daily. The recommended dose for alli is 60 mg three times daily. Orlistat medicine should be used 1 hour after or during a food that contains 15 mg of fat. Higher doses do not provide any additional benefit to the patients. It is more important to eat a nutritionally balanced, reduced calorie diet in which only 30% of calories come from
While eliminating the unabsorbed fat from the body, orlistat also eliminates some of the dietary vitamins that bind to fat (vitamins A, D, E and beta- carotene). Orlistat generally reduces the amount of vitamins absorbed by the body. In that case, you may need to take a multivitamin containing several "fat-soluble" vitamins so as to help your body to get the required amount of vitamins. You need to take the multivitamin at least two hours before or several hours after the orlistat, to ensure that the vitamins are not bonded to fat.
Vitamin K affects the blood thinning effect of warfarin (Coumadin). Vitamin K binds to fat and during elimination of fat, it may get reduced. Reduction of vitamin K will increase the effects of warfarin and that may result in abnormal bleeding from the warfarin.
Cyclosporine (Sandimmune) should be used two hours before or after orlistat because Orlistat may reduce the absorption and blood levels of cyclosporine.
